David Warner failed to take Sydney Thunder over the line against Sydney Sixers in match number 34 of the ongoing BBL 2023-24 season. Making his return to the Thunder set-up, with a grand helicopter entry no less, the legendary opening batsman scored a sluggish 37 off 39 balls before he was holed out in the deep by Jordan Silk off Steve O'Keefe’s slower one.

Warner’s sluggish knock curtailed off a slower one

David Warner, who recently retired from Tests and ODIs for Australia, made a return to Sydney Thunder setup in their must-win BBL 2023-24 game against Sydney Sixers at the iconic SCG.

Chasing 152 for a win, Warner shared a rollicking 44-run opening stand with Englishman Alex Hales before the latter’s dismissal triggered a colossal top-order collapse for the Thunder. From 44-0 in just a little above four overs, the team slipped and fell their way to 90-6 off 15.1 overs.

Warner himself struggled to get going as he chewed up 39 balls to score just 37 runs, with a mere boundary and two sixes to his name. In a bid to score some quick runs against the mounting asking rate, the dashing opener bludgeoned Sixers’ Steve O'Keefe over his leg side, only to misread the left-arm spinner’s slower one to find Jordan Silk at deep midwicket.

David Warner’s dismissal at 101-7 pretty much extinguished Sydney Thunder’s dwindling hopes as they folded up for just 132 in 19.5 overs to lose the game by 19 runs. The defeat marked their fourth in succession this BBL 2023-24 season, as they slumped to number seven on the eight-team points table.
