Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s English import Tom Abell nearly pulled off a sensational boundary save against Durban’s Super Giants in match number five of the ongoing SA20 2024 season. Turning up for the defending champions at Gqeberha’s St George’s Park, an outstretched Abell leaped across to his right at deep square leg boundary during the 18th over of the Super Giants innings in an attempt to save a certain six.

Tom Abell puts up fielding and batting show

Durban’s Super Giants middle-order batters JJ Smuts and Nicholas Pooran motored their way to a 100-run third-wicket partnership from just 50 balls to take their side near the 200-run mark by the completion of 18 overs.

Smuts bludgeoned four boundaries and seven sixes in his thunderous 38-ball 75-run knock to top-score in the innings, while Pooran blasted 60* from just 31 balls from his end of the crease.

Notably, the last of Smuts’ seven sixes nearly became a dot, courtesy of some sensational fielding brilliance from Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s Tom Abell.

During the 18th over the Super Giants innings, Smuts thwacked Eastern Cape speedster Daniel Worrall for a big hit towards his leg side. While his brutal slap seemed six for all its worth, even for non-striker batsman Nicholas Pooran, an agile Tom Abell at deep square leg boundary leaped to his right, got the ball into his hand, jumped outside the boundary and threw the ball back inside the ropes.

However, despite Abell’s sensational fielding effort, the on-field umpires signaled it a six considering that he had touched the rope while he was still in contact with the ball.

Durban’s Super Giants eventually gathered 225-3 from their 20 overs, leaving defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape a mountain to climb in the second half of the game.

Apart from impressing one-and-all with his fielding, Eastern Cape’s English recruit Tom Abell also top-scored in the run-chase with a sizzling 36-ball 65. Tristan Stubbs also clubbed a 26-ball 55 without receiving any assistance from the rest of the batters as they listed 190-9 from 20 overs.

The Eastern Cape eventually fell short of their target by 35 runs to register their first defeat of the SA20 2024 season after their opening washout against Joburg Super Kings.
