Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman held on to a sensational catch at short fine leg to send Sri Lankan middle-order batsman Charith Asalanka packing back to the pavilion.

Turning up for his country in the third and final match of their T20I series in Sylhet, Rahman also contributed with the ball by getting rid of Sri Lankan captain Wanindu Hasaranga in the backend of the innings.

Charith Asalanka, who scored valuable runs in each of the first two T20Is of the series, took on a short delivery from Shoriful Islam during the 15th over of the Sri Lankan innings. However, the middle-order batter was overwhelmed by the bounce, as he merely managed to get a top-edge after his powerful cross-batted swat.

Fortunately for Bangladesh, senior fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman stationed at short fine leg held on to an excellent catch at the position to hand his bowling teammate Shoriful his first wicket of the innings. Rahman’s fielding excellence also ensured Sri Lanka slipped to 133-4 inside 15 overs in quest of their quick runs.

Sri Lanka ended up smacking 174-7 by the completion of their 20 overs. Opening batsman and wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis top-scored in the innings with an attacking 55-ball 86, while Dasun Shanaka provided the death-overs impetus with his blistering 9-ball 19.

Mustafizur Rahman, meanwhile, recently made his return to competitive cricket after he sustained a head injury during last month’s BPL 2024 season. Shortly after the ongoing series against Sri Lanka, the speedster will fly out to India to join the MS Dhoni-led CSK franchise for the forthcoming IPL 2024 event.
