During the 14th match of the BBL 2024-25 season, Melbourne Stars skipper Marcus Stoinis left his team hanging out in the dry in the 183-run steep chase. He went for a big hit against Chris Green but found the fielder and thus got himself cheaply dismissed.

Sydney Thunder played Melbourne Stars earlier today in the 14th game of the Big Bash League 2024-25 edition at Manuka Oval, Canberra. The Thunder batted first on a batting-friendly wicket. Sam Billings' blazing 72 off just 39 balls steered Thunder to a comprehensive 182/8 total in the first innings.

The chase was never going to be easy, and Melbourne Stars suffered an early jolt in Sam Harper. Captain Marcus Stoinis and Ben Duckett, however, initiated a rescue mission to knit a 59-run partnership for the second wicket.

Just when Stoinis was looking comfortable on the crease, Chris Green delivered a crucial blow. The captain, batting on 22 off 17 balls, was looking to accelerate further. However, the smart tactics and calm composure by Green won the battle.

The moment was set up after some light-hearted banter between Stoinis and Billings. Green, unfazed by the chatter, bowled a deceptive length ball, holding it back just enough to lure Stoinis into a false shot. Attempting a lofted drive on the rise, the batter misjudged the delivery and ended up finding Ferguson at extra cover.

As soon as he made contact, Stoinis let out a visible gulp of disappointment, realising his error. The shot lacked the timing and placement needed to clear the infield. Ferguson made a simple catch that sent Stoinis to the pavilion. That dismissal proved fateful for Melbourne Stars as they fell 18 runs short in the chase to endure their fifth defeat of the season.

With zero wins in five games, the Stars have slipped to the bottom of the table, whereas Sydney Thunder jumped to fourth position with four points.
