On Saturday, December 28, New Zealand scripted one of the best comebacks in cricket history after they beat the Island Nation by eight runs to win the first T20I. With the victory, the Kiwis lead the three-match series 1-0.
The Mitchell Santner-led side, batting first, started the innings on a negative note, but rode on Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell's heroics and managed to put 172 runs on the board. In reply, Sri Lanka got off to the best possible start.

Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis stitched a 121-run stand for the first wicket, and Sri Lanka were in absolute control of the run chase. Nissanka played a brilliant 90-run knock. However, things started to go downhill once Jacob Duffy returned for his 2nd spell.
The 30-year-old provided the crucial breakthrough drew the first blood for his side, and got rid of Kusal Mendis on the 3rd ball of the 14th over. On the fifth ball, he sent Kusal Perera packing as the Sri Lanka batter returned to the pavilion for a two-ball duck.
Duffy further turned things around in New Zealand's favour after he dismissed in-form Kamindu Mendis for a golden duck.
Eventually, Sri Lanka went from 121/0 to 151/8 and suffered an eight-run defeat. Jacob Duffy won the player of the match award for his 3/21 in his four overs. New Zealand will now take on Sri Lanka for the 2nd T20I on December 30 at the same arena at Bay Oval.
