The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled the leading candidates to win the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year award for the year 2024. On December 28, the apex body named four cricketers in their nominations, including young Pakistan opener Saim Ayub and West Indies’ tearaway pacer Shamar Joseph.

As many as four cricketers made it to the nominations for ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year award for the year 2024, as announced by the apex body on December 28. The ICC selected young Pakistan opener Saim Ayub, Sri Lanka’s prolific young batter Kamindu Mendis, West Indies speed demon Shamar Joseph and England’s all-round apparent Gus Atkinson.

Saim Ayub, who made his ODI and Test debuts earlier this year, starred in Pakistan’s three successive ODI series wins in away conditions, which included remarkable triumphs in Australia and South Africa. The cricketer scored 515 runs in nine matches spanning the three series at a splendid average of 64.37.

England fast bowler Gus Atkinson also made instant impact for his team, despite joining the playing XI as a replacement of legendary paceman James Anderson. In just 11 Tests since his debut match from July this year, Atkinson has collected 52 wickets at 22.15, and has scored 352 runs at a standard ‘BazBall’ rate of 79.10.

West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph picked up five Australian wickets on his debut Test at the Adelaide Oval, and followed it up with a match-winning seven-fer at the Gabba in January. With 40 wickets across all formats in his first year of international cricket for the West Indies, Joseph broke into ICC’s reckoning to sign off a successful 2024.

Sri Lanka’s batting prodigy Kamindu Mendis, on the other hand, has racked up runs in heap throughout his nine-Test cycle of the year. The 26-year-old finished off his calendar year with 1,049 runs from just 16 innings at an astonishing average of 74.92. As of now, he is ranked fifth on the list of the year’s highest run-makers.
