Team India, in their quest of a rare Test series win in South Africa, were jolted early by South Africa’s high-flying pace attack within the opening morning of the first Test at Centurion. After Kagiso Rabada got Indian opener Rohit Sharma caught down at fine leg, Proteas debutant Nandre Burger dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill in succession, thus degrading the visitors further at 24-3.

Number four Virat Kohli and his junior teammate Shreyas Iyer made tough efforts to rebuild the Indian innings thereafter, as the two cricketers shared a fighting 50-plus partnership for the fourth wicket by lunch on Day 1.

At one stage of their rebellious resistance against South Africa’s pace might, Kohli was spotted giving out an invaluable advice to his partner in a bid to counter the unprecedented swing on offer at Centurion’s green surface.

Virat Kohli cautions Shreyas Iyer with an advice

During the 16th over of the Indian innings on Day 1, unbeaten Virat Kohli was spotted giving out an invaluable advice to his partner Shreyas Iyer at the other end. Caught on the stump mic, Kohli advised his junior teammate to watch out for the bowler’s grip in a bid to counter the unprecedented early swing at the Centurion surface. He said:

“Ball dekhte rehna hath mein uske, kidhar pakda rahega” (Keep looking at the ball in the bowler’s hand).

Virat Kohli’s advice seems to have wonders for Shreyas Iyer, at least until lunch, considering both cricketers remained unbeaten by the end of the morning session. Kohli (33*) and Iyer (31) and their fighting 67-run partnership extended India’s total to 91-3 till Lunch, but a peach from Kagiso Rabada ended Iyer's stay at the crease.
