Australia lost both openers in quick succession against Pakistan before constant rains forced an early stumps on Day 1 of the second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).


Labuschagne takes AUS to safety amidst rains, wickets

Australian openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja survived Pakistan’s new-ball burst to bat out till drinks after losing the toss in the morning. The two cricketers upped the scoring rate thereafter, minting 56 runs off the subsequent 13 overs until Warner’s dismissal at the hands of Agha Salman called for an early lunch.

Pakistan pace maverick Hasan Ali drew Khawaja’s outside edge in the post-lunch session to curtail the left-hander’s well-set innings at 42. At 114-2 after 42.4 overs, rains washed away the remainder of the afternoon session with Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith just about settling at the crease.

Against the run of play, Aamer Jamal induced a feather off Smith at the brink of stumps before Labuschagne guided Australia to safety with an unbeaten 44.

Facing 66 overs on the opening day, Australia reached 187-3 with Labuschagne and number five Travis Head (9*) still occupying at the crease.
