Rohit Sharma fell victim to a well-directed short ball from South African speedster Kagiso Rabada, becoming India's first casualty of the innings within the opening session of the first Test.

As it turned out, his dismissal drew in a huge wave of criticism on social media, with several users on X (formerly Twitter) taking to the micro-blogging site to mock the Indian opener for his shot selection.

Interestingly, the word 'selfless' also trended shortly after Sharma's departure, with a legion of Indian cricket fans using sarcasm to describe his short stay at the crease.

Rohit Sharma sarcastically described as ‘selfless’

Rohit Sharma, often described as 'selfless' by his fans for his aggressive run-scoring approach for India at the top of the order, found himself lacking against South Africa's speed gun Kagiso Rabada in the opening hour of the first Test match at Centurion.

In his attempt to hook Rabada out of the ground, the cricketer was holed out by Nandre Burger at fine leg to make his way back to the pavilion with just five runs to his name.

His early dismissal prompted numerous Indian cricket fans to take to X (formerly Twitter) to berate him for his untimely shot selection on a green Centurion surface.

While some expressed hostility in their criticism, others used sarcasm as a tool by describing Sharma's innings as a 'selfless' one for Team India in their series opener. Here is a look at some of the fans questioning Rohit Sharma's shot selection against Kagiso Rabada on the first morning of the opening Test:

After the early dismissal of Rohit Sharma, his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal and number three Shubman Gill were knocked over by South African debutant Nandre Burger as Team India sank further at 24-3.
