Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was trapped by South African speedster Kagiso Rabada within the morning session of the opening day of the first Test match between the two sides. The legendary opening batsman attempted to hook Rabada for a six, only to get holed out at fine leg by debutant Nandre Burger.

Rohit Sharma fails Rabada test, gone for five

After being put into bat first by South African captain Temba Bavuma, Indian skipper and opening batsman Rohit Sharma watchfully spent his initial few minutes at the crease alongside partner Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Just as he was about to survive South Africa’s new-ball burst, Kagiso Rabada tested him out with the short delivery and got him caught out at fine leg by Nandre Burger.

Rohit Sharma eventually made his way back to the pavilion after scoring just five runs from 14 balls, thus becoming India’s first casualty of the innings.

The match marks Sharma’s return to competitive cricket, considering he distanced himself from India’s T20I home series against Australia and from the white-ball fixtures in South Africa. Prior to the Centurion Test, the 36-year-old turned up for Team India in the final of last month’s 2023 World Cup at Ahmedabad.

The Centurion Test against South Africa is the first in a two-match series, which itself constitutes a part of the ongoing ICC 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
