Babar Azam's low strike-rate has always been the talking point and after a poor performance in the T20 World Cup 2024, he decided to give up his captaincy. He did decently in the ODI series, but now in the first T20I, he has failed again. He scored just three runs at the Gabba and fell on the second delivery off the bowling of of Nathan Ellis.
It was the first ball of the third over and Pakistan were struggling at 16-3. Nathan Ellis bowled a slower delivery on off. It was in the slot for Babar Azam and he went for a big slog. He hit it decently, but failed to get enough power behind his shot and ended up hitting it to Jake Fraser-McGurk at deep mid-wicket. He took the catch comfortably and it was a big blow to Pakistan.
Pakistan Batters Crumble In First T20I
After the wicket of Babar Azam, Pakistan lost Irfan Khan in the same over and soon they were reduced to 24-6. Haseebullah Khan, Abbas Afridi and Shaheen Afridi then hit some shots, but it was too much for the lower-order batters and Aussies won the game by 29 runs.
Earlier, Glenn Maxwell smashed Pakistan bowlers all over the park, coming in at number 3. He hit 43 off just 19 balls while Marcus Stoinis smashed 21 off just seven balls. Australia have now taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and second T20I will be played on Saturday, November 16th at the iconic SCG.
