In a dramatic and dream start, Islamabad United picked up two quick wickets against Quetta Gladiators in the PSL eliminator 1, and wicket-keeper Azam Khan pulled off a rare reflex catch to stun not only the crowd but also Quetta opener Saud Shakeel.

Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators clashed in the PSL 2024 season eliminator round earlier today. Courtesy of Martin Guptill’s half-century and captain Shadab Khan’s late 13 ball 23 runs cameo, the United posted 174 runs on board.

While the chase was steep for Quetta Gladiators, the latter failed to show any significant fight after initial blows.

Veteran all-rounder Imad Wasim opened the attack and got Quetta’s in-form opener Saud Shakeel in a soft dismissal. A leave would have awarded Shakeel an extra run-off wide.

But the batter premeditated a slog sweep, missed the timing terribly, and the ball popped off his glove towards keeper Azam Khan, who completed a jumping catch, thus guiding Islamabad to an early yet significant breakthrough.

Azam Khan acted swiftly on his reflexes to take a one-handed jumping catch. While he fumbled with one leg up swinging in the air, Khan managed to strike the balance and most importantly, held into the catch that saw Quetta's in-form batter Saud Shakeel, walk back to the dressing room.

Meanwhile, Shadab Khan found an opening and called up his trump card, Naseem Shah, from the other end.

Naseem bowled full onto the leg stump line to catch Jason Roy in an awkward position. Roy exposed his stumps to execute a drive but could only manage a thick outside edge, which flew to Faheem at slip. Ashraf saw the ball dipping and swiftly moved to his right to grab the ball inches off the turf.

Meanwhile, replays showed that Faheem Ashraf managed to get his fingers underneath the ball, and the catch was deemed legal.
