Shubman Gill is one of India’s brightest young talents, but in Test cricket, a specific weakness has started to stand out. After his recent dismissal in the Manchester Test vs England, Gill has recorded 4 dismissals while trying to leave the ball, joining Cameron Green in the unwanted list.

The bizarre moment occurred during the first inning of the fourth Test between India and England held at Old Trafford. After openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal lost their wickets, captain Gill, who has been in the form of his life, walked out to bat at no. 4.

Moments before tea break on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, Shubman Gill’s poor judgement outside off stump cost him dearly again, as Ben Stokes trapped him LBW with a sharp delivery. 

Gill misread the line and left a ball that angled in and struck his front pad. The impact was full and direct, right in line with the off stump. 

Umpire Rod Tucker raised the finger after a brief pause, and Stokes roared in celebration. Gill reviewed, hoping for a reprieve, but ball-tracking showed it was crashing into the stumps. He departed for 12 off 23 balls.

This is the 4th time that Shubman Gill has been dismissed in Test cricket while trying to leave a ball, 3 times against pace bowlers and once against spin. This mode of dismissal, where a batter tries to let the ball go past without playing a shot but still gets out, is something fans usually associate with inexperienced batters.

Interestingly, only one player has been dismissed more often this way since Gill’s debut: Australia’s Cameron Green. This shows that Gill’s struggle is not very common, even among other new players.

However, his brainfade moment has already cost India significantly, as they lost 3 wickets with 140 runs on the board. The small partnerships haven’t yet transformed into a big one, which may keep India from posting a big total.

But for now, questions over Gill’s weakness with leaving the ball have baffled the fans. His inability to read lines is something concerning yet surprising for a player of his calibre and experience.
