Jake Weatherald has sent a loud and clear message to selectors that he’s ready for Test cricket. The 30-year-old left-hander smashed a brilliant 183 for Australia A in Darwin, making a strong case to wear the Baggy Green this summer.
With Australia still looking to settle their opening pair in Tests, Weatherald has hit form at the perfect time. His stunning knock comes after a fantastic Sheffield Shield season where he finished as the top run-scorer.
Over the last 12 months, the opening batter has piled up 1143 runs in first-class cricket at an impressive average of 57.15, including four centuries.
Jake Weatherald Hopeful Of Test Debut In High-Stakes Ashes Series
Australia will compete with England in the high-voltage Ashes Test series scheduled for later in the year. With Sam Konstas and Usman Khawaja struggling with form, the Aussies might explore young options to settle the opening pair.
Jake Weatherald, after scoring 183 off 275 balls in a recent Australia A game, believes a Test call-up could be around the corner for him. Talking to Cricket.com.au, he explained that the motivation behind hard work in domestic cricket is to represent the country at the big stage someday.
"Of course as a batter you're trying to put yourself forward to play for Australia. That's why we're here. It's why you play domestic cricket. Making runs is your best currency to getting higher honours so it's a good opportunity to make big scores and thankfully I made one today. It's just how it is. Making scores get you higher honours," Weatherald said.
McSweeney, Sam Konstas, and others are in the mix to open with Usman Khawaja for the Ashes, but Weatherald’s form has made him a serious contender. He added that if an opportunity arises for the Ashes, he is completely ready to make his chance count.
"If you keep making runs, of course you're going to get noticed more – and I've done that. Obviously there's some great candidates there as well, and they've earned their right to be there. So to be amongst them is a pretty proud moment. But I'm batting well, and I think I'm ready to go if it comes to that moment," he added.
While the Australia A vs Sri Lanka A game ended in a draw, all eyes are now on Weatherald as he prepares for Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield season and possibly two four-day matches on the India A tour in September. Those matches in Lucknow will test him in very different conditions.
