For the fourth successive time in the ongoing series, India captain Shubman Gill lost the coin flip against his opponent, Ben Stokes. Four matches into his Test reign and captain Gill is yet to win a single toss in the ongoing 5-match series. Luck has not been with the newly appointed red-ball captain as he extends India's embarrassing toss record.
Across formats, this was the 14th consecutive time in 2025 where India had failed to call it correct during toss time, a record which dates back to January. This event has a one in 16,384 or 0.000061 percent chance of happening. (Data driven from Wisden.).
Interestingly, India Women's team lost seven tosses in a row on their recent England tour, before snapping their losing streak in the final ODI, on Tuesday, July 22.
When was the last time India won a toss?
The last time India's men's captain called it correct during toss was against England in a T20I game on January 28 in Rajkot. In that match, Suryakumar Yadav, the India skipper, decided to bowl first after the toss, and the decision backfired as the visitors posted 171/9, and in reply, India could only score 145/9.
Apart from India, West Indies (1999), England (2022-23), New Zealand (1972-73), and Vanuatu (2023-24) have lost more than 10 tosses in a row.
Teams with most consecutive toss loss
Team | Tosses Lost | Captain(s) |
India | 14* | |
West Indies | 12 | Jimmy Adams, Brian Lara, Carl Hooper |
England | 11 | Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes |
New Zealand | 10 | |
Vanuatu | 10 | Joshua Rasu, Ronald Tari |
The streak started with Suryakumar Yadav, who, after winning the toss in the Rajkot T20I, lost the next toss. Then, the mantle was carried forward by Rohit Sharma, who lost the toss in the home ODIs vs England, followed by the entire Champions Trophy event.
Then, Gill was appointed the India captain, and the not so good luck carried forward as he lost the coin flip at Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord's, and now in Old Trafford, to extend his streak to 4, and India's to 14.
