How often does it happen that a batter plays a clean defensive shot and his bat gets broken in half?. This is exactly what transpired with India opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal, during the first innings of the 4th Test in Manchester. He played a nothing shot, and yet, his bat was shattered as the opening batter needed a new willow to continue playing.

Woakes breaks Jaiswal's bat

Interestingly, it wasn't one of the quickest deliveries of the morning session, as Jaiswal found himself in demand of a new bat. The incident occurred during the 9th over of the match when Chris Woakes bowled a hard-length ball, and the opener went for a back-foot defence shot.

The ball hit the bat hard, and the handle snapped, as it was disjointed from the willow. The Indian batter immediately called for a new blade, as he aimed to re-group and continue playing. Woakes bent his back on the delivery and bowled it with a bit of extra pace which did the damage to Jaiswal's bat.

Jaiswal under pressure after Lord's debacle

India's reliable opener, Jaiswal, has done extremely well in the ongoing England tour, as he negates the early storm, and often plays with an aggressive intent to push England bowlers on the back-foot.

So far in 3 matches, Jaiswal has accumulated 241 runs, and also has a century to his name. However, despite all the hardwork, Jaiswal came under scrutiny for his shot selection in the second innings of the Lord's Test match.

India needed a paltry 193 to go 2-1 up in the series, and Yashasvi Jaiswal was expected to play a mature knock, which was expected of him. However, the southpaw played a reckless pull shot which cost him his wicket as the Indian batting lineup crumbled under pressure and lost the match.

He was criticised for his shot-selection, and the team management is praying that the batter plays sensibly as India need their best opener to negotiate the early movement at Old Trafford.
