Shubman Gill found himself few inches short of a well-deserved century against England on Day 4 of the Rajkot Test. The cricketer was involved in a colossal mix-up with night watchmen Kuldeep Yadav in the opening hour of the morning session.
Gill eventually made his way back to the pavilion for 91, before taking the Indian lead towards the 400-run mark. Notably, through his untimely dismissal, the 24-year-old joined legendary Indian cricketer MS Dhoni among a few others for a rare unfortunate Test record.
Shubman Gill joins MS Dhoni in unfortunate list
Shubman Gill, who resumed Day 4 at 65*, belted confident boundaries off James Anderson and Tom Hartley to add to this overnight score in the morning session. Just as he looked all set to get to his fourth Test century and his second of the ongoing series, he was involved in a colossal mix-up with Kuldeep Yadav.
During the 64th over of the innings, Yadav took off after swatting Hartley towards mid-on. However, the night watchman instantly turned back to leave Gill at the mercy of a strong Ben Stokes’ throw at the other end. The number three batter eventually found himself a few inches short of his crease, thus brining an end to his innings at 91 from 151 balls.
Gill’s unfortunate dismissal made him only the sixth Indian batter in Test history, and the first in over a decade to be run-out in the 90s. Former captain MS Dhoni was the last Indian to be runout in the 90s, after he missed out on his century against England back in 2012.
Here is a look at all Indian batters to be run-out in the 90s in Test cricket:
Players | Score | Instances |
---|---|---|
Vinoo Mankad | 96 | WI, 1953 |
M.L. Jaisimha | 99 | PAK,1960 |
Dilip Vengsarkar | 90 | SL, 1982 |
Ajay Jadeja | 96 | WI, 1997 |
MS Dhoni | 99 | ENG, 2012 |
Shubman Gill | 91 | ENG, 2024 |
Even though Shubman Gill missed out on his century, his attacking knock helped India take their lead past the 400-run mark by the fourth afternoon.
Earlier in the match, Gill was dismissed for a duck by English paceman Mark Wood on Day 1 before centuries from Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja took them to 445.
