The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has rejected the 10-year proposal from former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi for The Hundred.

Modi, residing in England since he was handed a lifetime ban from the BCCI, had proposed ECB to organize The Hundred between July 1 and August 15, i.e., at the height of English summer. The former IPL official also pitched the 10-year plan of financing and acquiring the tournament through a private investment.

While exact reasons for turning down Modi is yet to be determined, several reports speculate that the ECB did not want to strain their relations with the BCCI by signing a deal with their discarded member.

ECB rejects Lalit Modi’s The Hundred offer

Not long ago, Lalit Modi had expressed his interest of persuading the ECB to bring investors onboard for a 10-team The Hundred tournament. He also proposed the English board to shift the competition’s 100-ball format into T20 mode. His offer sheet outlined a team purse of USD 10 million per season.

ECB eventually chose not to enter any negotiations with Lalit Modi. While the board values the self-sufficiency of The Hundred, several reports claim that they also fear the possibility of straining their ties with the all-influential BCCI.

The Hundred kicked off in 2021 and became an instant hit among English cricket fans. The upcoming 2024 season of The Hundred, both men’s and women’s divisions, will commence from July 23 onwards.
