In a nail-biting encounter at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Saturday, Australia and New Zealand wrote a new chapter in the ICC ODI World Cup history books by achieving the highest run aggregate ever in a World Cup match.

Historic run feast in Dharamsala as AUS vs NZ clash sets new World Cup record

The two cricketing giants combined to produce a staggering 771 runs, breaking the previous record of 754 set by South Africa and Sri Lanka in Delhi earlier this edition.

The Australian batting lineup, known for its aggressive approach, set the tempo early in the match. The team posted a massive 388 runs, marking their third-highest total in World Cup history.

Key performances came from David Warner, who provided a solid foundation with his fifty (81), and Travis Head (109), who made an unforgettable World Cup debut with a blistering 59-ball century. This effort steered Australia to their record-setting third consecutive 350-plus score in the tournament.

However, the Kiwis were not to be outdone. Chasing a mammoth target, New Zealand showcased their batting depth and resilience. Youngster Rachin Ravindra led the charge with a stellar 89-ball 116, displaying maturity beyond his years.

With the game seemingly slipping away, all-rounder Jimmy Neesham (58) launched a valiant lower-order assault that brought New Zealand extremely close to what would have been a record chase. Despite Neesham's heroics, New Zealand ended just five runs short of Australia's total.

This epic battle at Dharamsala surpassed the combined score of 754 runs between South Africa and Sri Lanka, making it the highest aggregate in World Cup matches. The only other encounter to cross the 700-run mark was between Australia and Bangladesh in 2019, where they combined for 714 runs.
