Pakistan, under Babar Azam, slumped to their fourth successive defeat at the 2023 World Cup by coming up short against South Africa in a crunch Chennai thriller. South Africa’s last-wicket pair survived long enough for skipper Babar to get exhausted of all his pace options, which subsequently forced him to resort to spinner Mohammad Nawaz.

Bowling the 48th over of the innings, Nawaz conceded an easy ball towards leg stump, gracefully helped away behind square for a winning boundary. As the South African dugout basked itself in jubilant celebrations, the ‘Men in Green’ skipper was seen yelling at his bowler for erring in line and length.

Nawaz’s troubles do not seem to end anytime soon as the all-rounder has now received a scathing criticism from former Pakistan captain Aamer Sohail.

Mohammad Nawaz’s place questioned by Aamer Sohail

Former captain Aamer Sohail has reprimanded Mohammad Nawaz by questioning his place in the Pakistan team. The 57-year-old angrily cited Nawaz’s performances against India, Australia and South Africa in the ongoing 2023 World Cup, and berated him for throwing away his wicket at critical junctures of the match.

Sohail also described the all-rounder as a player who is not even good enough to compete at club-level cricket, let alone play for Pakistan at the international level.

Having turned up in five World Cup 2023 matches for Pakistan, Mohammad Nawaz has managed to secure just two wickets, including one against Netherlands, all while failing to contain runs from his end. The all-rounder also failed to make any impact with the bat, having scored just 81 runs across four innings at an average of 20.25.

Pakistan will now face Bangladesh in a virtual World Cup 2023 dead-rubber at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on October 31.
