In an intense contest that epitomized the fierce Trans-Tasman rivalry, Australia edged past New Zealand by just five runs in Match 27 of the World Cup 2023 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Saturday. A crucial component of Australia's victory was the standout performance by Travis Head, who smashed a blistering century in his comeback match.

Head's century powers Australia to thrilling win over Kiwis

Australia posted a gigantic total of 388, thanks largely to Head's quickfire 109 from 67 deliveries which included 10 fours and seven sixes. It was a day when the left-handed batsman announced his return in style after an injury hiatus.

His knock played a pivotal role in ensuring the Aussies secured their fourth consecutive win, especially crucial after they faced defeats in their first two matches.

The Kiwis responded valiantly with Rachin Ravindra's fiery 116 off 89 and Jimmy Neesham's explosive 58 off 39 balls, but they fell agonizingly short, ending up with 383/9. The match, which went down to the final over, saw Mitchell Starc squaring off against Neesham in a nail-biting finish.

After the game, Head, who was awarded the 'Player of the Match', shared his thoughts on the victory and his own performance.

While Head expressed relief and happiness at his successful return. The southpaw indicated that despite having only a few practice sessions following his almost two-month break due to injury, he felt it was more about regaining confidence upon his return.

“Nice to be back. Nice to be contributing. Nice to get the win, got very close there, was a hell of a game. I had only had a couple of hits (since returning from injury). Obviously had a six-7 weeks off. I think so (asked if it is just about getting the confidence back on return). Few blokes found it tough out there, keep pushing with the bat,” said Warner.

The Adelaide-born further pointed out the synergy he and Warner possess, hinting at how their partnership is instrumental for the team.

“We (him and Warner) play together really well. We complement each other really well, make sure we stay connected with each other and stay with each other,” added the 29-year-old.

Australia's next assignment in the World Cup will be against arch-rivals England on November 4.
