Babar Azam's captaincy maybe a viral topic of discussion within the Pakistan cricket community after the team's disastrous string of ICC World Cup 2023 losses but former wicketkeeper-batter Rashid Latif reckons the skipper is being given a harsh deal.

As Pakistan stand on the brink of elimination after going down heavily against India, Australia, Afghanistan and South Africa, Babar has faced extensive heat from fans and prominent experts for his decision-making on and off the field.

There is a brewing debate on the man's future at the helm of affairs after the marquee tournament with a shocking Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) statement indicating Babar's days at the top job are coming to an end.

Amidst the furore, Latif has been the voice of reasoning and doesn't believe the captain is solely responsible for his team's collective failure over six matches. The ex cricketer also claimed Babar is facing the wrath of the media and fans unfairly and hasn't been provided enough support by the PCB regime under Zaka Ashraf.

Latif Claims Lack Of PCB Support For Babar

Speaking as an expert for Pakistan-based 'PTV Sports' alongside fellow Pakistan cricketer Bazid Khan, Latif claimed he is aware of the lack of communication and support to Babar during a tough period at PCB's end.

The former wicketkeeper said Babar has been trying to call PCB chairman Ashraf for two days but there has been no response from the board's head, raising speculations of a direct rift between the two individuals with the cricket board presumably unhappy with the World Cup proceedings and Babar's leadership.

"There is a lot going in the Pakistan media right now about Babar Azam and his captaincy but they are also fake news. Let me provide you a true update: Babar Azam has been trying to contact the PCB chairman for the last two days and he is not replying."

Latif further claimed awareness of the backroom discussions and said:

"Ashraf is learnt to have told the players under Babar-led group that the recent central contracts that were announced aren't going to stay and fresh central contracts will be announced."

The cricketer questioned how the PCB expects the Pakistan players to perform at their level best with uncertainty around their dues and overall contracts?
