Prithvi Shaw’s career seems to be spiralling downward. The once-promising cricketer, who captained India’s Under-19 team to glory, has hit a rough patch. His recent performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) and the IPL 2025 auction paints a bleak picture of his cricketing journey.

Shaw faced a major setback when no team bid for him in the IPL 2025 auction. Despite a base price of ₹75 lakh, there were no team that showed interest in the 25-year-old batter. Established Indian players usually find takers, even at their base price, but Shaw was an exception.

Prithvi Shaw Fails To Perform In SMAT

Shaw’s struggles didn’t end at the auction. In the 54th match of the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match between Mumbai and Maharashtra, Shaw was removed for a three-ball duck. Facing CSK pacer Mukesh Choudhary, Shaw was ruled caught behind down the leg side. Replays suggested the decision might have been wrong, but the umpire’s call stood, forcing Shaw to walk back.

Shaw’s reaction said it all—disbelief and disappointment. For a player looking to make a strong comeback, this was another bitter pill to swallow.

Ricky Ponting’s Take On Prithvi Shaw

Former Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting expressed his dismay over Shaw’s struggles. Now part of Punjab Kings’ coaching staff, Ponting said Shaw was one of the most talented players he had ever worked with. However, he hinted that a lack of discipline might have contributed to Shaw’s current situation.

"Sad. You know, Prithvi, I still say now he is as talented a player as I probably ever worked with. He goes unsold in the auction and then doesn't even come back in the accelerator. And there are a lot of teams here that are looking at him. He's not playing. But as I said, the game catches up with you. So, yeah, I guess that. Yeah, that's about all you can say," Ponting said.

What Went Wrong for Shaw?

The former U-19 captain burst onto the international scene with a century on his Test debut. However, his career soon derailed due to fitness issues and inconsistent performances. The last time Shaw represented India was back in July 2021 and his declining form saw him fall out of favour with selectors.

Recently, Shaw was even dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad for being “overweight".

At just 25, Prithvi Shaw still has time to turn things around. However, the road to redemption won’t be easy. With IPL teams overlooking him and poor domestic performances, Shaw needs to address his fitness and focus on consistent cricketing performances.
