Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has reached an impressive milestone in his short Test career. With 12 five-wicket hauls in just 41 innings, he has now joined legendary pacer Chaminda Vaas in the list of Sri Lanka’s top bowlers with the most five-wicket hauls in Test cricket.
Jayasuriya achieved this feat during the second Test against Bangladesh in Colombo. Responding to a 247-run total by the Tigers in the first inning, Sri Lanka posted 458 in the second inning.
Prabath Jayasuriya Dismantles Sri Lanka With Inspiring Fifer
With a 211-run lead in hand, Prabath Jayasuriya unleashed his magic for Sri Lanka. He picked up a five-wicket-haul, dismantling dangerous batters like Shadman Islam and Mushfiqur Rahim.
This was his 12th fifer in Test cricket, and he is now third in the list of most five-wicket-hauls picked by Sri Lankan bowlers in Test cricket.
At the top of the list is none other than Muttiah Muralitharan, who remains not just Sri Lanka’s best but also the highest wicket-taker in Test history. He picked up 67 five-wicket hauls in 228 innings between 1992 and 2010.
Next is left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, who played between 1999 and 2018. He picked up 34 five-wicket hauls in 170 innings, often leading Sri Lanka’s bowling attack after Muralitharan's retirement.
Most Five-Wicket Hauls by Sri Lankan Bowlers in Tests:
- 67 - Muthiah Muralidaran (228 innings), 1992-2010
- 34 - Rangana Herath (170 innings), 1999-2018
- 12 - Prabath Jayasuriya (41 innings), 2022-2025
- 12 - Chaminda Vaas (194 innings), 1994-2009
Meanwhile, courtesy of Prabath Jayasuriya’s fifer, Sri Lanka bowled out Bangladesh for 133 in the third inning to register a commanding inning and 78-run victory.
Sri Lanka won the 2-game Test series by 1-0 after the first game in Galle ended in a draw. Now, the two sides will face off in a 3-game ODI and T20I series beginning on July 2.
