Sri Lanka wrapped up a commanding innings and 78-run victory over Bangladesh on Day 4 of the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo, sealing the two-match series 1-0.

Resuming Day 4 at 115 for 6 in their second innings, still trailing Sri Lanka by 96 runs, Bangladesh’s slim hopes of taking the match into a fifth day were quickly extinguished by the relentless home bowling unit led by left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya.

Bangladesh Collapse Against Spin

With no extra runs on the board at the start of the day, Bangladesh’s innings unravelled in a hurry. Litton Das, the last recognised batter, fell for 14 in the second over of the morning by Prabath Jayasuriya. That dismissal triggered the final collapse, as Jayasuriya, already among the wickets from Day 3, struck twice more to finish with figures of 5 for 56.

Tharindu Ratnayake, another spinner brought into the XI, also made a strong case with the ball. He removed Mehidy Hasan Miraz late on Day 3 and followed it up with the wickets of Ebadot Hossain and Taijul Islam on Day 4, closing the innings with 2 for 19 in 5.2 overs.

Captain Dhananjaya de Silva contributed too, claiming 2 for 13, including the prized scalp of Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, who once again failed to convert his start into something meaningful. In total, Bangladesh were bowled out for just 133 in 44.2 overs, losing their final four wickets for only 18 runs in the morning session.

Sri Lanka Dominated With Bat and Ball

Earlier in the match, Sri Lanka posted a towering first-innings total of 458, powered by a brilliant 158 from Pathum Nissanka and a quick-fire 84 from Kusal Mendis. They had gained a first-innings lead of 211, which ultimately proved more than enough to seal the match with an innings margin.

With the ball, Sri Lanka's attack was disciplined and probing throughout both innings. After reducing Bangladesh to 247 in the first innings, they applied relentless pressure again in the second, never allowing the visiting batters to settle.

Bangladesh’s Struggles Continue

The defeat added to Bangladesh’s ongoing struggles in away Tests. Despite promising starts from Anamul Haque and Mominul Haque, no batter could convert it into a meaningful score. Senior batter Mushfiqur Rahim top-scored with 26, but that was the only innings of note as the team crumbled under scoreboard pressure and high-quality spin.
