England's first inning was poor in response to the BlackCaps' resilient performance, all thanks to Matt Henry (48-4) who made initial holes in the top order. The pacer picked up openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett within 5 overs to crush England's morale.

Henry was then aided by Mitchell Santner and William O'Rourke who crushed the top and middle order with three scalps each.
