Indian speedster Mohammed Shami delivered a stunning performance in the opening ODI of the three-match series against Australia at Mohali on Friday.

Shami's stellar performance leaves Kumble's record behind

The right-arm quick returned with outstanding figures of 5/51, leading the Australian team to be bundled out for 276 runs. Notably, the fifer marked his second five-wicket haul in the ODI format.

With this splendid performance, Shami recorded his 11th four-wicket haul in ODI cricket in just 92 innings. This landmark achievement has seen him surpass the legendary Anil Kumble, who took 10 four-wicket hauls in 263 innings.

Currently, the record for the most four-wicket hauls for India in ODIs is held by Ajit Agarkar with 12 hauls in 188 innings. However, what sets Shami apart is the incredible frequency at which he has reached this milestone, outpacing his contemporaries and predecessors. In fact, Shami also became the first Indian pacer to take a fifer in the country in 16 years.

In another significant achievement, Shami has ascended to be the second-highest Indian wicket-taker in ODIs against the formidable Aussies. With 37 wickets from 23 matches, he has surpassed Agarkar's record of 36 wickets from 21 encounters.

Former Indian pace spearhead Javagal Srinath and spin legend Harbhajan Singh trail behind with 33 and 32 wickets, respectively. The top spot is occupied by the legendary Kapil Dev, who boasts 45 wickets against the Aussies in 41 fixtures.

Meanwhile, on the batting front, India began their chase of 277 on a positive note. At the time of writing this article, the opening duo of Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad has provided a robust start, steering India to 66/0 in the first 11 overs.
