India’s new-ball agent Mohammed Shami restricted Australians to 276 at a high-scoring Mohali venue in the first ODI of their three-match series. After interim skipper KL Rahul won the toss and opted to field first, Shami struck within the opening over of the match to remove provisional Australian opener Mitchell Marsh.

The speedster eventually finished with a five-fer, only his second in ODIs, to unfurl the best bowling figures of the innings and the best of his 50-over international career.

Warner’s 52 biggest denominator of Australia’s 276

After Mitchell Marsh’s first-over dismissal, his opening partner David Warner successfully negated Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah’s new-ball threat to chart his 29th ODI fifty. The dynamic southpaw bludgeoned six fours and two sixes in his innings before he became Ravindra Jadeja’s only wicket of the day at a near run-a-ball 52.

Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis and Marcus Stoinis all failed to convert their starts into a big one, while captain Pat Cummins blasted a nine-ball 21* in the death overs. Regardless, their combined contributions lifted Australia to a competitive 276.

Mohammed Shami eventually accounted for half of Australia’s side to finish with career-best ODI figures of 5-51. His new-ball pacemate Jasprit Bumrah and spin twins Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja pocketed a wicket each from the innings. Shardul Thakur, on the other hand, went wicketless throughout his ten overs and leaked 78 runs from his end.
