Brief Scores: Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 173-6 (20 overs) [Anuj Rawat: 48 (25), Dinesh Karthik: 38* (26); Mustafizur Rahman 4/29 (4), Deepak Chahar 1/37 (4)] lost to Chennai Super Kings: 176-4 (18.4 overs) [Rachin Ravindra: 37 (15), Shivam Dube: 34* (28); Cameron Green 2/27 (3), Yash Dayal 1/28 (3)] by six wickets.

CSK’s newly-appointed skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad started off with a win as the ‘Yellow Brigade’ defeated RCB in the opening match of the IPL 2024 season at Chepauk.

Dinesh Karthik, Anuj Rawat lift RCB to 173

RCB captain Faf du Plessis justified his own call of batting first by racing to 35 runs inside the first five overs of the innings.

The South African veteran shared 41 from 27 balls with opening partner Virat Kohli, before he miscued one to Rachin Ravindra at deep point off Mustafizur Rahman.

The Bangladeshi speedster, on his CSK debut, also removed RCB’s number three Rajat Patidar for a duck before Deepak Chahar accounted for Glenn Maxwell the following over.

CSK’s triple-wicket burst from Mustafizur and Chahar ended up jolting RCB from 41-0 to 42-3 in the space of just six balls inside the opening powerplay.

Virat Kohli cautiously forced his way to a run-a-ball 21 before becoming Mustafizur Rahman’s third victim of the innings, only to be succeeded by Cameron Green’s departure as RCB’s troubles worsened further at 78-5.

Fortunately for the visitors, wicketkeeper Anuj Rawat forged a remarkable lower-order alliance with seasoned keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, with the two adding 95 runs to RCB’s total from the remaining 50 deliveries.

While Rawat slapped four boundaries and three sixes for his 25-ball 48, Karthik blasted an enterprising 26-ball 38* as RCB concluded their innings at a competitive 173-6.

Rahman finished his four-over spell with clinical figures of 4-29. While the speedster also completed 50 IPL scalps through the course of his spell, RCB legend Virat Kohli scaled the 12,000-run mark in T20s during his brief knock.

CSK ace clinical chase with collective efforts

CSK’s newly-appointed captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and his opening partner Rachin Ravindra employed methodical approach to the run-chase, with the New Zealander bludgeoning 37 runs from 15 balls.

Gaikwad himself listed a couple of confident boundaries before he edged one to Cameron Green at slip off Yash Dayal’s opening spell.

Thereafter, Ajinkya Rahane and Daryl Mitchell slapped crucial 20s in the middle overs to take CSK past the 100-run mark in just the 11th over of the innings.

With CSK firmly positioning themselves in the chase, Green’s double-strike to remove Mitchell and Rahane tilted the game back in RCB’s favour at 110-4.

Fortunately for the hosts and defending champions, star all-rounders and power-hitters Shivam Dube (38* off 28) and Ravindra Jadeja (25* off 17) aced the deal by sharing a match-winning 66-run partnership in the subsequent six overs.

Their collective batting brilliance helped CSK mow down RCB’s 173-run total with six wickets and more than an over to spare, as they launched their title defence this IPL season with an emphatic win.
