Gill will lead Gujarat Titans [IPL.com]

To cap off the first weekend of the Indian Premier League 2024, Gujarat Titans will host Mumbai Indians at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on 24th March. Both the franchises have been in the news for the last few months over the saga around the ex-Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya’s controversial return to MI.

Gujarat Titans, the two-time IPL finalists in their first two seasons, have managed to strike some fantastic balance in their team right from the word go. 

They will now have their new leader of the pack in young Shubman Gill while still having some experienced teammates around him to help. 

Under the new leadership, while still managing to retain the same core, GT will try to emulate what they’ve been doing for the last couple of years.

In an otherwise settled unit, one area of concern for the Gujarat-based franchise will be the unavailability of veteran Mohammed Shami due to an injury. 

Shami, who led their bowling attack in the first two seasons has been replaced by Sandeep Warrier in the squad. Gill and coach Ashish Nehra will look at the other experienced bowlers Umesh Yadav and Mohit Sharma to put their hands up and take the role in this scenario.

On the other hand, IPL giants, Mumbai Indians, will have a change of captaincy for the first time since 2013 as Hardik Pandya takes over the reins from five-time IPL-winning captain Rohit Sharma. 

MI, who faltered in the playoffs last season, would like to start off the new campaign on a high after going trophy-less for  consecutive years.

MI, who have always been a team that believes in good processes and backing the players, would like to go back to the drawing board and stick to the basics and get back to the winning ways.

Mumbai will miss the services of arguably the best T20 batter, Surya Kumar Yadav in the initial phase of the season, while Luke Wood and 17-year-old Kwena Maphaka have been named replacements for Jason Behrendorff and Dilshan Madhushanka, respectively.
