Team India won the Super Over after inducing a dramatic Sri Lankan collapse in the third T20I to seal the three-match series by a 3-0 margin at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Sri Lankan debutant Chamindu Wickramasinghe and right-arm off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana subjected India to an abysmal 30-4 at the end of the opening powerplay. While Theekshana trapped Yashasvi Jaiswal in front of stumps and had Rinku Singh caught out at mid-on by Matheesha Pathirana, Wickramasinghe dismissed Sanju Samson for a four-ball duck inside the first four overs.

Asitha Fernando, meanwhile, removed Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav a while later to finish with figures of 1-11 in his two-over spell.

Amidst tumbling wickets, dashing opener Shubman Gill steadied the Indian innings with a 39-run defiance. The cricketer belted three boundaries in his 37-ball knock, and shared a 54-run partnership with Riyan Parag (26 off 18 balls) to take India past the 100-run mark in 15 overs.

Gill and Parag eventually fell prey to Wanindu Hasaranga (2/29) in the same over as India slipped to 105-7.

Arriving to the crease at 102-6, Washington Sundar added 25 runs to the total to take India to a respective 137-9 from 20 overs. The all-round apparent flogged a couple of boundaries and a six in his 18-ball cameo before he was castled by Maheesh Theekshana in the final over of the innings.

Meanwhile, Theekshana’s late strike helped him seize figures of 3-28 from his four overs.

Sri Lankan opener Kusal Mendis shaped 43 runs at the top while forming handy partnerships with Pathum Nissanka (26 off 27 balls) and Kusal Perera (46 off 34 balls). Nissanka became the first casualty of the run-chase at 58-1 courtesy of Ravi Bishnoi.

After steering Sri Lanka to 110-1 in 15 overs, well-set Mendis was trapped in front by Bishnoi as the Indian spinner finished with figures of 2-38.

Requiring just 28 runs from the remaining five overs with nine wickets in hand, Sri Lanka lost seven quick wickets in yet another late collapse. After Ravi Bishnoi initiated India’s fightback, Washington Sundar piled on the momentum with successive wickets of Wanindu Hasaranga and Charith Asalanka at 117-4.

Unlikely bowling heroes Rinku Singh and Suryakumar Yadav also picked up two wickets each in the final two overs to restrict Sri Lanka to 137-8.

Successfully enforcing a Super Over, Team India won the tie-breaker to seal the series 3-0 courtesy of a two-wicket burst from Washington Sundar.
