New Zealand spinners Mitchell Santner and Ajaz Patel engulfed Indian batters for the second time in the second Test at Pune’s MCA Stadium to secure a huge victory. The outcome also helped the visitors take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Here’s the timeline of how IND vs NZ panned out in Pune:

IND vs NZ Highlights: Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin Roll Up Final Five For 24 Runs

New Zealand’s overnight batters Tom Blundell and Glenn Phillips expanded their unbroken sixth wicket partnership to 48 runs with a blistering batting approach within the first 30 minutes of the day. Blundell pounded 41 runs with three boundaries from his end before he was knocked over by Ravindra Jadeja at 231-6.

Blundell’s dismissal triggered a dramatic lower-order collapse within the New Zealand camp, as they ended up losing their final five wickets for just 24 runs. Jadeja orchestrated the visitor’s batting downfall by scalping Mitchell Santner and Ajaz Patel out of the equation to claim astonishing figures of 3-72 from his 19.4-over industrious display.

For the visitors, Glenn Phillips punched out a swift 48 with four boundaries and two sixes to become New Zealand’s second biggest patron of the innings after Tom Latham’s 86.

Ravichandran Ashwin (2-97) had Tim Southee defeated by flight for a duck to roll up New Zealand for just 255 in 69.4 overs. Ashwin and Jadeja’s collective spin brilliance, coupled with Washington Sundar’s overnight efforts of 4-56 set Team India a monumental target of 359.

IND vs NZ Highlights: Jaiswal Explodes With Blistering 77 In Daunting Pursuit

Chasing 359 for a win, India lost captain and legendary opening batter Rohit Sharma for just eight to Mitchell Santner in the sixth over of the innings. Sharma’s junior partner Yashasvi Jaiswal, however, slapped a splendid 41-ball half-century during his belligerent 62-run stand with Shubman Gill for the second wicket.

Overall, Jaiswal launched three maximums and nine boundaries in his thunderous 65-ball knock of 77 to top score in the innings. Their burgeoning partnership was eventually curtailed by Santner with the wicket of Gill (23 off 31) at 96-2. Gill’s wicket prompted number four Virat Kohli to form forces with unbeaten Jaiswal at the crease, at a time when Team India still required another 263 runs for an unlikely heist.

IND vs NZ Highlights: Mitchell Santner, Ajaz Patel Keep India Down

Mitchell Santner (6-104), who picked up seven wickets in the first innings, added six more Indian wickets to his tally to claim a sensational match-haul of 13-157. In the decisive innings of the match, some of his prized-scalps included the wickets of Virat Kohli (17), Sarfaraz Khan (9), Ravichandran Ashwin (18) and that of a raging Yashasvi Jaiswal (77) to reduce Team India to 206-8 at one stage.

Ravindra Jadeja punched out an attacking 42 at number eight, but Ajaz Patel (2-43) picked up the remaining two wickets on offer to envelop the Indian innings for just 245 in around 60 overs in the final session of Day 3.

Courtesy of New Zealand spinners, the visitors helped themselves to a huge 113-run win, and a historic series victory with a match to spare. The win not only marked New Zealand’s first-ever series triumph on Indian soil, but also India’s first defeat at home since 2012.
