New Zealand command a huge lead over Team India by stumps on Day 2 of the second Test match at Pune’s MCA Stadium. Visiting captain Tom Latham starred with the bat while Washington Sundar and Mitchell Santner hogged the limelight with the ball on an action-packed day.
Here’s the timeline of how IND vs NZ panned out in Pune:
IND vs NZ Highlights: Santner, Phillips Ensure India Lose Seven By Lunch
Resuming the Indian innings at 16-1 on Day 2, overnight batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill (30 off 72) brought up their team’s 50-run mark before the latter was trapped in front of stumps by Mitchell Santner. A couple of overs later, India’s charismatic number four Virat Kohli was beaten by Santner’s dip and drift after making a sluggish nine-ball one.
Jaiswal (30) failed to convert his start into a big one as he edged one off Glenn Phillips to leave India hanging at 70-4. Phillips also knocked over dangerman Rishabh Pant for just 18 before Santner dismissed Sarfaraz Khan and Ravichandran Ashwin in quick succession to ensure Team India had a dismal lunch at 107-7 in 38 overs.
IND vs NZ Highlights: Santner Takes Seven To Get NZ Over 100 Runs Ahead
Ravindra Jadeja added a valiant 38 from his end to top score in the innings and formed a swift 33-run partnership with Washington Sundar (18*) for the eighth wicket. Caught at the crease to a fullish ball, Jadeja eventually made his way back to the sheds at 136-8 to become Mitchell Santner’s fifth victim of the day.
Santner also picked up the final two wickets of Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah in quick succession to envelop India’s entire innings for just 156 in 45.3 overs. Picking up his maiden Test five-fer in the process, the New Zealand spinner claimed career-best figures of 7-53 to hand his team a huge first innings lead of 103 runs.
IND vs NZ Highlights: Sundar Fights On For India, But Latham Stretches NZ Lead
Emboldened with a lead of 103 runs, captain and opening batter Tom Latham further stretched New Zealand’s advantage with identical top-order partnerships with Devon Conway (17) and Will Young (23). While both Conway and Young were both dismissed by Washington Sundar and Ravichandran Ashwin respectively, Latham marched on to crack an elegant 86 from 133 balls with 10 boundaries to list his 30th Test fifty.
Sundar picked up three more wickets in the day, including that of a well-set Latham, to claim his maiden Test 10-wicket match haul. New Zealand reached stumps on Day 2 at 198-5 from 53 overs, with Tom Blundell (30*) and Glenn Phillips (9*) batting at the crease while holding a lead of 301 runs in the bank.
