Brief Scores: India (1st innings): 326-5 (86 overs) [Rohit Sharma: 131 (196), Ravindra Jadeja: 110* (212); Mark Wood 3/69 (17), Tom Hartley 1/81 (23)] by stumps on Day 1.

Team India enveloped England with complete control on Day 1 of their third Test battle at the Niranjan Shah Stadium.

Sharma and Jadeja headline India’s Day 1 dominance

Shortly after winning the toss and opting to bat first, captain and opening batsman Rohit Sharma lost partner Yashasvi Jaiswal and number three Shubman Gill early in the innings. England’s seasoned new-ball merchant Mark Wood accounted for both youngsters as his twin burst jolted India’s top-order at 24-2.

Moreover, Rajat Patidar was also undone a while later through some spiteful turn and bounce from visiting spinner Tom Hartley as India’s dwindling fortunes further declined to 33-3.

Comeback man Ravindra Jadeja and captain Sharma subsequently led India’s recovery with a blistering 204-run partnership, one which lasted for nearly 55 overs until the final session of the day. The two cricketers starved England’s raging bowlers for another wicket, with both plundering majestic centuries in the process.

Sharma himself pumped out 131 runs from just 196 balls before he became Wood’s third Indian victim of the innings. Jadeja raced to his century, only the fourth of his expansive Test career, during the twilight stages of the day.

Debutant Sarfaraz Khan soon joined India’s run-fest with a splendid half-century of his own before a mix-up with Jadeja and a direct hit from Wood orchestrated his downfall at 62.

Team India eventually reached 326-5 by stumps with Jadeja (110*) and Kuldeep Yadav (1*) still batting at the crease.
