David Bedingham led South Africa’s recovery against New Zealand on Day 3 of their series-deciding second Test match at Hamilton. The Proteas middle-order star listed 110 runs from just 141 balls to top-score for his side in their second innings, thus setting up hosts New Zealand a competitive target of 267.

David Bedingham leads South Africa’s recovery

David Bedingham, who made his Test debut against India back in December 2023, tonked his first international century against New Zealand in the series-deciding second Test match at Hamilton’s Seddon Park in February 2024.

Batting at number five and arriving to the crease following the early dismissals of Raynard van Tonder and both South African openers at 39-3, Bedingham’s held his team’s run-scoring fort with crucial 50-plus partnerships with Zubayr Hamza and Keegan Petersen.

Bedingham completed his century by the final session of the day before his dismissal to New Zealand debutant William O’Rourke triggered a lower-order batting collapse for the visitors. Comfortably placed at 202-4 at one stage, South Africa rolled over for just 235, with final six wickets amounting to just 33 runs between them.

David Bedingham’s splendid century propelled South African lead to 266 runs as they aim to level the two-match series with a win in the second Test.

Later in the day, New Zealand openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway cautiously kept ticking off the runs before the latter was trapped in front by Dane Piedt. With New Zealand reaching 40-1 by stumps, they now require another 227 runs to manufacture a remarkable run-chase and a 2-0 series win.
