In a one-sided contest, India beat England by four wickets in the 1st ODI to take a 1-0 lead in the three-game series. Batting first, England posted 248 runs on the board courtesy of Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell’s fifties. However, the total wasn’t enough as Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel scored a fifty each to lead India to a dominant victory in 38.4 overs.

IND vs ENG 1st ODI Highlights: Phil Salt annihilates debutant Harshit Rana

England opted to bat first after winning the toss and openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett unleashed carnage in the powerplay. Debutant Harshit Rana faced the wrath of Salt as he hammered him for 26 runs in the 6th over, featuring 3 sixes and 2 fours. The duo picked up 75 runs opening partnership before a run-out cost Salt his valuable wicket. 

India capitalised on the breakthrough as Harshit redeemed himself with two wickets of Duckett and Harry Brook in a single over. Joe Root’s return to the ODI format also ended in disappointment as he was dismissed off 19 runs by Ravindra Jadeja.

However, Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell rebuilt England’s inning with a 59-run partnership. Both batters scored a half-century each and surpassed the 200-run mark. Mohammad Shami also clicked a wicket of Brydon Carse to open his account. After Bethell’s wicket in the 43rd over. England couldn’t add any significant runs. 

Jofra Archer’s late heroics of 21* off 18 balls powered the Englishmen to a total of 248 runs before the team got bowled out. That being said, for India, Jadeja and Harshit were successful bowlers, with 3 wickets each.

India captain Rohit Sharma came out to bat with Yashasvi Jaiswal in the second innings. However, the skipper’s lean patch continued with Saqib Mahmood dismissing him on just 2 off 7 balls. 

He pitched an inswinger on a full length that angled it sharply onto the pads. Rohit, slightly early on the flick, connected off the toe-end, resulting in a mistimed shot that ballooned in the air. Livingstone, stationed at mid-on, calmly positioned himself and completed the catch with ease.

Jaiswal followed his skipper and went back to the hut with 15 off 22 balls. Moreover, with Virat Kohli out due to a knee injury, Shubman Gill was promoted to no.3. He stitched a 94-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer to put India in the driver’s seat.

After Shreyas Iyer was dismissed following his half-century, Shubman Gill partnered up with Axar Patel to knit a 108-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Patel slammed 52 off 47 balls before getting cleaned up by Adil Rashid in the 34th over. However, the breakthrough came a little late for England as India needed only 28 runs. 

Gill, meanwhile missed his well-deserved century by 13 runs to get dismissed on 87 by Saqib Mahmood. Regardless, Hardik Pandya hit a few sensible boundaries to power India to a comfortable four-wicket victory.
