Team India overcame early jitters to take the opening day’s command against Bangladesh in the first Test match at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium on September 19.
Here’s the timeline of how IND vs BAN panned out in Chennai:
IND vs BAN Highlights: Hasan Mahmud Ensures Great Lunch For Bangladesh
Young paceman Hasan Mahmud got the new ball moving for Bangladesh as the speedster got rid of Indian captain Rohit Sharma and number three Shubman Gill within the first 45 minutes of play. Mahmud also got the prized scalp of dangerman Virat Kohli a while later as the hosts slumped to 34-3 at one stage of the morning session.
Unbeaten opener Yashasvi Jaiswal led India’s counterattacking response with dashing wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant for the fourth wicket. Pant, in particular, raced to 33* by the end of the opening session while Jaiswal approached a well-deserved half-century at 37*. In a 23-over session, Team India accrued 88-3.
IND vs BAN Highlights: Rana, Mehidy Hasan Join Mahmud In Another Three-Wicket Session
A loose shot from Rishabh Pant cost him his wicket right after the lunch break to hand Hasan Mahmud his fourth wicket of the day and wicketkeeper Litton Das his third catch since morning. Yashasvi Jaiswal marched on with senior partner KL Rahul to take India to the brink of the 150-run mark.
Jaiswal even listed his fifth Test half-century, and scored 56 runs in all from 118 balls before he was toppled by Bangladesh fast bowler Nahid Rana. KL Rahul made his long walk back to the sheds just a couple of deliveries later after getting his start dented by Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
All-rounders Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja formed forces at 144-6 to take Team India to 176-6 by the end of the second session.
IND vs BAN Highlights: Ashwin, Jadeja Lead Indian Fightback To See Off Opening Day
Indian all-rounders Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja deprived Bangladesh bowlers off another wicket for the remaining 38 overs of the day as the hosts reached a commanding 339-6 by stumps.
Ashwin went on to plunder his sixth Test match ton, doing so at a brisk pace as he finished at 102* from just 112 balls with 10 boundaries and two sixes.
Firebrand batter Jadeja pounded 86 unbeaten runs off his own from 117 deliveries, also with 10 boundaries and a couple of sixes. Their partnership swelled to 195* for the seventh wicket, and the two cricketers will now resume Indian command on Day 2.
