On Thursday, Ravichandran Ashwin proved once again why he has been the biggest match-winner for India in red-ball cricket in the last decade or so. The 38-year-old, who came to the crease when India were in all sorts of trouble, smashed a magnificent century to help his side recover.
Ashwin, Jadeja Stand Tall Against Bangladesh
Of course, his brother-in-arms Ravindra Jadeja was there till the end to get the job done, as India closed on 339/6 after Day 1 of the first Test match against Bangladesh after being left reeling at 144/6. While Ashwin remained not out on 102*, Jadeja, on the other hand, was on 86*.
Ashwin reached the landmark by playing Shakib Al Hasan through mid-wicket for a single. It was his sixth hundred for Ashwin in Tests, and his second in Chennai. No wonder the entire stadium gave him a standing ovation to applaud him, and Ashwin too had a big smile on his face after getting there in just 108 balls.
IND Vs BAN Day 1: Ashwin, Jadeja Make Headlines
Earlier in the day, India lost Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill without adding much on the scoreboard. Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul tried hard, but failed to give enough support to Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made a gritty 56.
However, Ashwin and Jadeja steadied the ship, taking the scoreboard from 144/6 to 339/6 at stumps, as India are in complete control despite early setback. For Bangladesh, Hasan Mahmud wreaked havoc with four big wickets, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nahid Rana had a wicket each beside their name.
