Young Bangladesh paceman Hasan Mahmud frolicked through India’s star-studded top-order on the first morning of the series-opening first Test at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium. Playing just the fourth Test of his career, the 25-year-old fast bowler dismissed the likes of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli within his opening spell before curtailing Rishabh Pant’s well-set stay with the old ball.

In his very next over, Hasan Mahmud clocked 135.2 kph to remove India’s number three batter Shubman Gill. The speedster hurled down a full delivery down the leg side to induce a nick off Gill. Five balls later into his opening spell, Mahmud landed the ‘big fish’ in Virat Kohli, as the youngster drew the Indian batting giant forward for an ambitious cover drive only to feed Litton Das his third catch of the morning. The ball to Kohli also clicked a mid-range speed of 133.9 kph.

At the start of the second session of the day, Hasan Mahmud logged a 135.8 kph short and wide delivery to account for the exit of a well-set Rishabh Pant from the crease.

All in all, Hasan Mahmud seems to be clocking in the mid-130s consistently, even during the later parts of the day. His opening-day performance also indicates that the youngster heavily relies on maintaining tight lines and lengths instead of pace.

The young paceman, who made his Test debut earlier this year, might well have first demonstrated signs of blossoming into a key asset for Bangladesh’s bowling attack in the years to come.
