In a virtual knockout contest between MI and DC in IPL 2025, Tilak Varma played a questionable knock of 27 off 27 balls in the first inning. His slow knock left the fans fuming as they lashed out at him on social media.
For the final spot available in the IPL 2025 playoffs, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals clashed at Wankhede Stadium on May 21. The match was a virtual knockout, as the winner will book a seat in the top 4.
However, a lack of intent from Mumbai’s promising batter Tilak Varma disappointed the fans, and their rage spilled onto social media.
Tilak Varma Faces Heat After Abysmal Knock Vs DC
Mumbai Indians batted first but lost Rohit Sharma on just 5 runs in the powerplay. Ryan Rickelton (25) and Will Jacks (21) failed to contribute either, but Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma stacked up a 50-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
However, in this 50-odd runs partnership, Varma contributed with 27 runs, but his strike rate was 100 as he took 27 balls. This slow inning hurt MI’s scoring rate as they had only 113 runs on the board at 14.5 overs.
Varma couldn’t bat long either as he was dismissed by Mukesh Kumar in the 15th over, marking the end of a scratchy knock. In a crucial game where MI’s playoff berth was at stake, Varma’s intent baffled the fans. Their outrage was visibly seen on social media as fans slammed Tilak Varma left, right, and centre.
"Tilak Varma's downfall began when he liked the reel of the greatest no.3, who he thought was him." - @KohliCheeku18
"Tilak Varma is a true Rohit fanboy. Paid a classical tribute to Hitman on his Test retirement." - @academy_dinda
"WHAT'S WRONG WITH TILAK VARMA? His strike rate in IPL 2025 Below 125: 8, 125-170: 0 , 170+: 2. Leaving those two knocks, has been a liability for MI this year" - @HitmanCricket
"Tilak Varma, you are supposed to contribute for the win. What the fuk are you doing? Not the 1st game. 24 runs in 24 balls in do or die game. Seriously?." @SameerDhimanHP
"Hall of shame innings so far from Tilak Varma." - @kumarvivek_22
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Varma came under fire for lack of intent. In a match against LSG held earlier in IPL 2025, Tilak scored 23 runs off 25 balls in a tricky chase, and MI were forced to retire him out with 24 needed off the last over. Mumbai ended up losing the game, which cost them 2 crucial points.
