The Mumbai Indians are currently against the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025. One of the most rare instances was seen during this game. MI's middle order batter, Tilak Varma was retired out ahead of the final over of the game.

What Is Retired Out?

As per the ICC rules, "A batsman retires out if he retires without the umpire's permission and does not have the permission of the opposing captain to resume his innings. If such a return does not occur, the batman is marked as 'retired out' and this is considered a dismissal for the purposes of calculating a batting average."

In this case, Tilak Varma decided to retire himself out as he was not able to connect the balls and it was increasing the scoring rate of the team. The batter walked out and made way for Mitchell Santner, whom the team management thought could be a better option at the moment.

What Is The Difference Between Retired Out And Retired Hurt?

Retired out is when the batter actually does not bat again in an innings despite not being dismissed on field. However, in case of retired hurt, is when a player walks off due to an injury that has take on the field. In this case if the player is treated and gets fit, he can resume the innings again.
