England racked up 669 runs against India by Day 4 of the fourth Test of the series at the iconic Old Trafford in Manchester. Mounting a formidable lead of 311 runs, senior pros Joe Root and Ben Stokes both plundered majestic centuries as England shattered numerous batting records at the venue, including the record for registering the highest team total in Test cricket here.

Following England’s run riot against India, here is a look at five of the highest Test totals ever recorded at Old Trafford.

5. England 592 all out vs Australia, 2023

England, employing their standard ‘BazBall’ routine under the leadership of Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, batted out 107.4 overs against Australia in the fourth Test of the 2023 Ashes series at Old Trafford in Manchester to aggregate 592 runs. Enforcing play amidst constant rain delays, the English team maintained an explosive run rate of 5.49.

Opening batter Zak Crawley led England’s charge at the top by tonking 189 runs off just 182 balls with 21 boundaries and three huge sixes. Apart from Crawley’s ton, five middle-order batters hammered down brisk half-centuries, with Jonny Bairstow making 99* off 81 balls. The match resulted in a rain-marred draw, with Australia leading the series 2-1 at the time.

4. England 611 all out vs Australia, 1964

Batting after Australia kept them on the field for 255.5 overs in the fourth Ashes Test of 1964 at Old Trafford, hosts England returned the favour by batting for 293.1 overs. Opening batter Geoffrey Boycott started off the innings with a cautious 58, before captain Ted Dexter grinded out for 484 deliveries to make 174.

Ken Barrington at number four further thwarted the Australian bowlers through his marathon 256-run knock from 624 balls, by occupying the crease for more than ten hours. The match eventually turned out to be a high-scoring draw.

3. England 627-9d vs Australia, 1934

Winning the toss and batting first in the third Test of the 1934 home Ashes series against Australia at Old Trafford in Manchester, England tallied 627 runs for the loss of nine wickets before captain Bob Wyatt called for a declaration.

After both openers, Cyril Walters and Herbert Sutcliffe punched out crafty half-centuries at the top, middle-order batters Patsy Hendren (132) and Maurice Leyland (153) clattered domineering tons to wear out the Australians.

Les Ames, Gubby Allen and Hedley Verity also cracked fifties as England batted 201 overs in the first innings of the high-scoring drawn Test.

2. Australia 656-8d vs England, 1964

Leading 1-0 in the 1964 Ashes series in England, Australia batted first in the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester and piled up 656-8d. The visitors kept the Englishmen on the field for nearly two-and-a-half days to play 255.5 overs.

Opener Bill Lowry made 106, while his partner and captain Bob Simpson hammered down a huge triple ton (311 off 743 balls) with 23 fours and a six. Brian Booth at number six missed his century by just two runs as Australia mounted the first-ever Test total in excess of 650 runs at the venue.
