The second match of the Duleep Trophy 2024 season reached its verdict inside three days, with India C sealing the six points on offer at Anantapur’s Rural Development Trust Stadium.

India D overnight batters Axar Patel and Harshit Rana batted for nearly an hour on Day 3 to stretch the team’s second innings total to 236. Patel carved 28 runs in the innings from 59 balls with two boundaries and a six, while Rana shaped 12* from 30 balls as the two formed a fighting 33-run partnership for the ninth wicket.

Their batting resistance was eventually halted by India C spinner Manav Suthar, who had Patel caught out by Ruturaj Gaikwad at 236-9. Suthar also cleaned up newcomer Aditya Thakare at number 11 the following over for a four-ball duck. The 22-year-old spin prodigy bagged astonishing figures of 7-49 to limit India D to 236 in 58.1 overs.

Chasing 233 runs for a victory, India C openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sai Sudharsan laid out a strong start at the top of the order. The two cricketers shared 64 runs off the opening wicket from just 10.4 overs before Sudharsan (22 off 34) made his way back to the sheds courtesy of some sharp turn from India D spinner Saransh Jain.

Captain Gaikwad belted eight boundaries in his near run-a-ball 46 and ensured India C maintained a run-rate of nearly six-runs-an-over during his stay at the crease. By the time of his dismissal to Saransh, India C had wiped out 77 runs off their target in just a little above 14 overs.

Forming forces at 77-2, India C middle-order batters Aryan Juyal and Rajat Patidar deprived India D bowlers of another wicket for the next 23 overs. The two cricketers shared 88 runs during that period and slapped identical 40s to take India C past the 150-run mark.

Saransh Jain landed the much-needed breakthrough for India D by removing a well-set Patidar (44 off 77) at 165-3. Juyal also followed suite the following Arshdeep Singh over, thus igniting India D’s brief fightback late in the game. Jain and Axar Patel collectively claimed two more wickets in quick succession as India C slipped from 165-2 to 191-6 in the space of just 12 overs.

Unbeaten Abishek Porel and bowling hero Manav Suthar eventually eased the nerves for India C by shrugging off the remaining 42 runs without further casualty.
