When the discussion began around who is India’s best-ever ODI batter across formats at home, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli made sure they sit above the top due to their impeccable consistency with the willow. Rohit Sharma, however, is not too far behind, as he got past Rahul Dravid, another of India’s all-time greats, during their second ODI of the three-match series against South Africa, taking place at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, Raipur.
While Tendulkar is at the top of the chart, having got 14192 runs across three formats in India, Kohli is placed second with 12373* (he is still batting as I type). Rohit has now made 9005 runs, a run more than Dravid.
Most Runs Scored in India Across Formats
- 14192 - Sachin Tendulkar (India)
- 12373* - Virat Kohli (India)
- 9005* - Rohit Sharma (India)
- 9004 - Rahul Dravid (India)
- 7796 - Virender Sehwag (Asia/India)
Talking about the match, India, after shocking 20 consecutive toss defeats, are batting on 84/2 after 13 overs, with Kohli batting on 17 and Ruturaj Gaikwad on 18*, having smashed three boundaries in 14 balls. For South Africa, Marco Jansen took the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal, while Rohit fell to Nandre Burger.
It is important to note that India won the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi, and hence, a victory in Raipur will assure they won the 50-over series with a match to spare.
Prior to that, they lost to the World Test Champions in their own backyard in the longest format, that too in a humiliating manner. No surprise, Gautam Gambhir were among the headlines due to unwanted reasons, and a ODI series victory might help him to silence them all before the focus shifts to 5-match T20I series, set to take place between 9 to 19 December.
