In a significant development, India’s full-time ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill is reportedly set to miss the upcoming three-match 50-over leg against South Africa. According to the Times of India (TOI), a BCCI official confirmed the development, as “he has been advised more rest by the specialists.”
Therefore, India will now have a new captain and a new vice-captain in the absence of Gill and Shreyas Iyer, who has also been recovering from a major rib injury that he suffered in Australia.
"Unfortunately Gill will not be available for selection for the three ODIs vs South Africa. He has been advised more rest by the specialists and continues to be monitored by the BCCI medical team," a BCCI official told TOI.
Pant, Rahul, Axar among leadership contenders
The TOI report further added that KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel are the three names whom the BCCI has shortlisted for the captaincy responsibilities.
While Rahul appears to be an automatic choice for leadership, Pant, who last played an ODI for India in September last year, has been in discussions for the position after being appointed as India’s Test captain for the Guwahati Test.
Gill to be back in IND vs SA T20Is
The 26-year-old had been playing non-stop cricket for a while before sustaining the injury during the Eden Gardens Test, and hence, Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, who has been checking on him, advised not to rush for better results in the future.
However, Gill is expected to be back in action when the five-match T20I series between India and South Africa begins on December 9.
Meanwhile, the ODIs will begin on November 30 in Ranchi, followed by December 3 and 6, in Raipur and Visakhapatnam respectively.
