There is a major update on India ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill's fitness. The young opening batsman might return to action soon for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa, but his participation still depends on his fitness. Gill is currently recovering from a neck injury and is being closely monitored by the medical team.
Gill reached the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on December 1, where he has been undergoing rehabilitation. The good news is that he has already completed one full batting session without any restrictions, and he showed no signs of discomfort afterward. This is an important step in his recovery.
Indian captain is responding positively so far
Over the next few days, Gill will slowly increase his training intensity. He will take part in more batting sessions and also do ground exercises to check whether he can handle the workload. According to TOI report, he is responding positively so far.
His final fitness test, known as the Return to Play (RTP) match, is scheduled for December 5. This match will help doctors and the team management decide whether he is ready to be picked for the T20I series.
The Indian team management is hopeful but cautious. They want Gill fully fit, especially with the T20 World Cup 2026 approaching. India’s squad for the South Africa T20Is is expected to be announced today or tomorrow, but the final decision might depend on Gill’s medical update.
Notably, even if he is not ready for the first match, there is still a chance that Gill could play in the last two or three games of the series, depending on how quickly he recovers. The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, has already been informed about his current condition.
Gill suffered the neck injury while playing a sweep shot during the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens. He had to retire hurt and was briefly admitted to a hospital in Kolkata. Although discharged the next day, the discomfort kept him out of the rest of the Test series and the ODIs.
The T20I series will begin right after the three-match ODI series starting on December 7 at Barabati Stadium.
