India's ace all-rounder Deepti Sharma ended 2025 in style after some memorable performances throughout the calendar year, including the remarkable Player of the Tournament in the home World Cup as India created history and went on to back it by a 5-0 T20I series win against Sri Lanka.
With the focus now shifting to T20I cricket as the T20 World Cup approaches in mid-2026, Deepti's form remains instrumental for the Women in Blue, and she looks up to the task, as she became the leading wicket-taker in the history of this format as India closed the year with a win in Thiruvananthapuram. Below is a list of records broken by the off-spinner in the 5th T20I of the series.
All records broken by Deepti Sharma in 5th T20I vs Sri Lanka
Most wickets in Women's T20Is
Deepti went past Megan Schutt's record tally of 151 T20I wickets with the dismissal of Nilakshika Silva and ended the spell with 1/28. Having made her debut in January 2016, she took 130 innings to get to the top of this chart. Notably, four of the top five T20I wicket-takers in Women's cricket, including Deepti, are currently active players.
First Indian cricketer to reach the top of the T20I wicket-takers tally
The 29-year-old is the first-ever Indian player, male or female, to reach the top of the pile as the leading wicket-taker in T20I cricket. RP Singh in 2007 was the other player who came close to this record in the format when he was the joint-second highest wicket-taker (13) behind Shahid Afridi's 14.
Only player to take 50+ international wickets in a calendar year three times
Deepti finishes the calendar year 2025 with 53 wickets across formats. Previously, she has breached the fifty-wicket mark twice in 2022 (51 wickets) and 2024 (58 wickets). While seven women have taken 50 or more wickets in a calendar year, the Indian is the only one to do it multiple times, with 2025 being the third year to do so.
Closes gap as highest wicket-taker in international cricket
With her 1/28 vs Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram, the all-rounder sits at 334 international wickets. She is now only one wicket behind the retired Katherine Sciver-Brunt (335) and 21 behind the all-time leading wicket-taker Jhulan Goswami (355). Her 5 wickets in the Sri Lanka series helped her surpass Ellyse Perry's wicket tally of 331 wickets to become the leading wicket-taker among active women.
