Former T20 World Cup winner and legendary Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga has made a return to the national team dressing room ahead of the upcoming T20 mega event at home in February and March, as he was officially announced as a member of the support staff on a short-term basis to guide the young bowlers for the competition.
On December 30, Sri Lanka Cricket officially announced him as the fast bowling consultant for a period of 40 days, effective from December 15, to assist the likes of Sanath Jayasuriya and co. and share his valuable insights.
Malinga named as Sri Lanka's fast bowling consultant
During the time period from December 15 to January 25, Sri Lanka will notably host Pakistan for three T20Is on January 7, 9 and 11, where the possible effects from his appointment could be seen with the likes of Dushmantha Chameera, Eshan Malinga and Nuwan Thushara in the spotlight as the pacers in the team.
Malinga boasts of having worked with elite T20 fast bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult in his short coaching career. He has previously worked with the Mumbai Indians and MI's teams in MLC and SA20, while also spending time at the Rajasthan Royals camp.
As a bowler, he was one of the best, if not the best, during the death overs, with his nailed-on yorkers with incredible accuracy, which could be a crucial factor that played a role in this appointment, considering how brutal death overs batting has become in recent years.
In T20I cricket, he was the first player to go past 100 wickets and finished with 107 scalps in 84 matches at an excellent economy rate of just 7.42, while having 390 T20 wickets to his name in 295 appearances across different leagues around the world, while famously also lifting four IPLs with MI, among other accolades.
