India Women's captain Harmanpreet Kaur's rescue effort against Sri Lanka Women in the fifth and last T20I of the ongoing series in Thiruvananthapuram put India in a promising position by the end of the first innings, as they aim to finish the year with a 5-0 series win over their neighbours.
Having come into bat at 27/2 in 4.1 overs after they were put in to bat first, Kaur scored a fantastic 68(43) with 9 fours and a six to her name and got closer to Mithali Raj's tally in the list of Indian women with the most fifty-plus scores in the format with this innings. Below is the list of the top 5.
Most fifty-plus T20I scores for India Women
1. Smriti Mandhana - 33 in 151 innings (32 fifties and a hundred)
2. Mithali Raj - 17 in 84 innings (17 fifties)
3. Harmanpreet Kaur - 16 in 167 innings (15 fifties and a hundred)
4. Jemimah Rodrigues - 14 in 102 innings (14 fifties)
5. Shafali Varma - 14 in 94 innings (14 fifties)
Thanks to her crucial knock of 68 runs, alongside a 21(18) for Amanjot Kaur, India was able to score 175/7 in their final match of the calendar year and stand a good chance to defend the score with their formidable bowling line-up.
The only century to her name in the format was the first-ever T20I century for an Indian Women's player in the shortest format when she scored 103(51) vs New Zealand at the 2018 T20 World Cup. With this knock, she took her series tally to 130 runs in 5 innings at a strike rate of 131.31 and is the second leading run-scorer behind Shafali Varma's 241.
After clinching the fifty-over World Cup earlier this year, their focus is now on the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will be played in England from June 12 and how Harmanpreet fares will be crucial to India's chances at the competition.
