Sarfaraz Khan's fireworks stun Goa in Vijay Hazare Trophy
After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Goa had a positive start to the match, with Vasuki Koushik dismissing Angkrish Raghuvanshi cheaply for eleven runs. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Musheer Khan steadied the ship for Mumbai before Sarfaraz Khan lit up the stage with a power-packed hundred.
The middle-order batter came out with all guns blazing, smashing the Goa bowlers to all parts of the ground right from the get-go. He eventually completed his century in just 56 deliveries with the help of seven glorious fours and eight huge sixes.
Sarfaraz Khan finished his innings with nine boundaries and fourteen sixes for his 75-ball 157, giving a powerful statement to the selectors amid his repeated snub from the Indian team.
Mumbai have been prolific in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, winning their first three matches comfortably. Although Rohit Sharma has concluded his Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign, in-form players like Musheer and Sarfaraz haven't let Mumbai feel his absence.
Sarfaraz Khan, in particular, has emerged as a force to reckon with the bat for Mumbai in the tournament. The batter had a breakthrough season in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, scoring 329 runs at an average of 65.80 and a strike rate of 203.09.
He has followed it up with two impactful performances in the VHT, amassing successive fifty-plus scores against Uttarakhand and Goa.
Sarfaraz Khan auditions for a spot in IND ODI squad vs NZ
Despite getting dropped from the Indian Test squad, Sarfaraz Khan has kept his international comeback chances with a string of impactful performances in domestic cricket. He had a middling Ranji Trophy campaign before bouncing back in the subsequent white-ball tournaments, including SMAT and VHT.
Sarfaraz's red-hot form holds paramount importance, considering the BCCI has yet to pick the Indian squad for the home ODI series against New Zealand.
Although he hasn't played a single international match in the 50-over format, Shreyas Iyer's injury and India's decision to rest several T20 World Cup-bound players for the series could pave the way for his wildcard entry into the ODI squad against New Zealand.
